At least 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men will suffer from an osteoporotic fracture during their lifetime. The cost to the Canadian health care system of treating osteoporosis and fractures is estimated to be a staggering $1.9 billion annually! This is where naturopathic doctors have the power to make a difference not only in our patients' lives but also in our health care system.

Osteoporosis is condition in which the bones become porous and brittle promoting the risk of fracture. If you’re gotten a bone mineral density (BMD) scan, it will tell you how much your bones have degraded compared to the average young adult. Without the scan, there is no real way of knowing how your bones are doing until it’s too late and a fracture occurs.

The cause of osteoporosis is multifactorial but often includes hormone imbalances (often a decrease in estrogen, or a parathyroid hormone problem), vitamin K2 deficiency, an acidic diet and lack of exercise.

Approach:

We would evaluate your BMD scan, your blood work, your risk and family history of osteoporosis as well as assess your hormone levels. Even if you don’t have osteoporosis or osteopenia (early onset of osteoporosis), there’s a lot that you can do to prevent it especially if you have family members that have osteoporosis.

Solution:

  • Appropriate multi-mineral supplement
  • Correction of nutritional deficiencies
  • Hormone balancing with herbs and/or with BHRT
  • Personalized nutrition plan
  • Personalized exercise regime
