Cancer is when cells divide uncontrollably.  They can form a tumour, start anywhere in the body and then spread, ultimately causing death if the body is unable to return back to balance. Cancer is when cells divide uncontrollably.  They can form a tumour, start anywhere in the body and then spread, ultimately causing death if the body is unable to return back to balance. Did you know that we all make cancer cells? Our body is good at detecting when cells are acting outside of normal and so we kill or make those cells kill themselves (apoptosis) so that they don’t spread. When the body is unable to keep those cells that have gone array in check, this is when cancer growth occurs. Cells can become defective when the genetic material, or DNA in each cell becomes damaged and the cell no longer listens to instructions.

Your genetic make-up (family history) does not determine whether you will have cancer or not. Instead it is epigenetics (“above the gene”) or our environment that can turn genes on and off. You have a lot more control over you genetic expression than you think.

Here are some ways DNA can become damaged and cancer cells thrive:

  • Smoking
  • Chronic infections and a poor immune system
  • Eating foods high in trans-fats
  • Chronic exposure to endocrine disruptors such as plastics
  • Chronic exposure to environmental toxins (pesticides, skin care, cleaning products)
  • Eating an acidic diet (lots of meat and dairy)
  • Having a high sugar and high inflammatory diet
  • Vitamin and mineral deficiencies

Approach

At Willow Wellness, we treat the body as a whole (including the mind and spirit) instead of just looking at the single disease. We take a thorough medical history and perform a physical exam. We also request lab work and teach you its significance. If you currently have cancer, we work with your oncologist and make sure that our treatments do not interfere negatively.

Solution/Service

Whether you have cancer or want to prevent it because it runs in your family, there’s a lot naturopathic doctors can do. Our first goal is to determine if there are any lifestyle choices that are hindering the body’s ability fight or prevent cancer. Examples include:

  • Correcting any vitamin or mineral deficiencies
  • Examining your diet diary and make suggestions to improve it by increasing cancer fighting fruits and vegetables
  • Supplementing with antioxidants and herbs that are known to be effective in cancer treatment or prevention
  • Improving the immune system

We also include a lot of counselling in our treatment of cancer because it can impact our psyche greatly. We will teach you strategies to rewire your brain in thinking more positive thoughts and feeling happier. Depression is an understandable and common co-illness with cancer which cannot be overlooked. Studies have shown that having a more positive outlook on life with contribute to longevity.
